O bairro Recreio da Borda do Campo, periferia de Santo André, está situado em área de manancial às margens da Represa Billings, uma das principais fontes de abastecimento de água para Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, Brasil. Sua localização geográfica, isolamento e a normatização ambiental que regulamenta o uso e ocupação do solo, colaboraram para a formação de um bairro com características peculiares.
O nome do bairro remete as origens do município de Santo André, antiga Vila de Santo André da Borda do Campo, sugere o destino vislumbrado por seus fundadores e reforça sua posição em relação a cidade. A região, inicialmente planejada para ser um Clube de Campo, área de recreação, teve sua ocupação completamente alterada. Em meio a vegetação, sítios e casas de final de semana misturam-se a barracos e construções típicas da periferia de São Paulo, evidenciando todos os ciclos de ocupação da região.
Atualmente a construção do trecho sul do Rodo Anel de São Paulo (obra de construção de um anel viário que irá circundar a cidade, com objetivo de desviar o tráfego de cargas da capital) tem alterado de forma profunda a paisagem, o ritmo de vida e o desenvolvimento do bairro. A obra fortalece o isolamento da região, atuando como marco de separação, o Recreio da Borda do Campo ficará para fora dos limites do Anel Viário. Intenciono neste projeto realizar uma leitura desse isolamento, de sua complexidade estrutural e da vida na fronteira entre a cidade e o campo, fronteira essa em eterno deslocamento.

The neighborhood of Recreio da Borda do Campo (translated literally to English: Recreation Bordering the Countryside), on the outskirts of Santo André, is located on the banks of Represa Billings, one of the main sources of water supply for the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil. Its geographical location, isolation and the environmental policies regulating the use and occupation of the land, all collaborate to create a neighborhood with peculiar characteristics.
The name of the neighborhood reflects the origins of the municipal of Santo André, formerly known as Vila de Santo André da Borda do Campo, suggests the great expectations of its founders and reinforces its position in relation to the city. The region, initially meant to be a country club, a recreational area, had its fate completely altered. Surrounded by vegetation, farm houses and weekend homes can be found alongside shacks and other types of construction typical of the periphery of São Paulo, evidence of the various occupation cycles of the region.
The current construction of the southern stretch of the São Paulo Ring Road (a highway circling the city, intended to re-route the transportation of cargo away from the city) has profoundly altered the landscape, the rhythm of life and the development of the neighborhood. The construction increases the isolation of the region, acting as a line of separation – Recreio de Borda do Campo will be beyond the limits of this ring road.
My intention in this project is to investigate this isolation, its structural complexity and life on the limits between the city and the country, limits in perpetual motion.
